Pressure compensation element plastic/brass

Gay-Lussac’s law states that the volume of ideal gases at constant pressure and constant amount of substance is directly proportional to the temperature.
What sounds like classic theory from chemistry class, however, has a direct impact on the use of enclosures, as they are protected against dust and water, but not gas-tight. If there are temperature fluctuations in the housing, the pressure inside changes constantly.
Solar radiation on the housing increases the internal temperature and thus the internal pressure. Since an enclosure is not a closed system, air will push out of the enclosure to the outside. As soon as the solar radiation decreases and possibly even precipitation starts, the housing cools down quickly. As a result, the internal temperature drops, negative pressure is created in the housing and humidity is drawn in through the seal. If this falls below the dew point line, it condenses and settles on the electrical components. This poses the risk of corrosion or short circuits.
BOXEXPERT offers a pressure compensation element for this purpose, which prevents a negative pressure from developing which would draw in moisture. Depending on the version, the pressure compensation element continues to offer a high degree of protection. Thus, an IP protection of IP68 (up to a pressure of 0.8 bar) can be achieved with the diaphragm, and IP54 with the sinter filter.

Membrane

A special membrane made of PES polyethersulfone has pores that allow air exchange but are smaller than water drops and thus protect the inside of the housing from moisture. The pressure compensation element with diaphragm is also available in Ex version for increased safety (Ex e II).

Sinter filter

Due to the coarser material structure of the sintered disc, a much greater exchange of air is possible. The sintered disc is splash-proof and insect-proof.
